A premiação deste ano traz grandes novidades em relação aos prêmios. Será a primeira vez que homens e mulheres competirão lado a lado, sem discriminação de gênero, em categorias que elegerão melhor clipe e melhor música. "A Melhor Luta Contra o Sistema" também é uma nova categoria para este ano.
O VMA 2017 vai ocorrer na arena The Forum, em Inglewood (condado de Los Angeles), na Califórnia, no dia 27 de agosto, às 20h no horário local (meia noite no Brasil).
